Science should be fun, and one of the things that makes it fun is when we look at old questions with fresh eyes, turning a painting on its side, or better yet—taking it out of an old frame and placing it in an entirely new one. Being an outsider can afford an advantage like that of being a twelve-year-old in a PhD class, where you are free to ask questions that might otherwise seem too obvious. For instance, are we sure light has speed? The calculation of speed requires a frame of reference. If this is a holographic universe—an idea championed by Nobel laureate Gerard ’t Hooft, Juan Maldacena, Leonard Susskind, Stephen Hawking, and supported by substantial evidence—what is the best frame of reference?
